chain case cover gasket

making my own chain case cover gasket and on the one side there is a valley well actually 2 of them, what are they for, because the old gasket had two slots in the valleys but the rest of it was covered?
 

When I had mine opened up last year, I figured it was just an open path for venting the Chaincase without letting the oil get out.
 
ok yeah kinda figured something like that working on polishing my chain case right now as we watch the game! i finally found a136 skid locally planning on putting that under her tomorrow if everything goes right!
