So when they go bad do they stop making spark right away to the plug? Or does it just make less of a spark? This is not my Yamaha it's running great trying to help out a neighbor with his machine.
"usually" when a coil goes bad, its does`nt fire at all. weak fire, is usually caused by lack of ground, or good power not getting to a coil.

If you pull on the cord 15-20 times it may try to start once. There was some leaky fuel lines that I fixed and also after the fuel filter there that box that has a diaphram and gaskets it was leaking too. Anyways even put new plugs in and did not make a difference. He bought a new coil and it was $89.00 so I shure hope that is what the reason is for not starting. I did have it going a few times last week but pulled on the cord like 30 times!!! Also has new high grade 91 octane fuel in it.

Oh forget to mention that the coil that in in it is original from 1989.:sheep So it must be due for a change.

That box with the gaskets is probably your fuel pump. Are the plugs gettin wet??? If thats leaking you may be sucking air. Does the plug show good spark when you have it out?

You must be right fuel pump it has to be. Before the gaskets were replaced the plugs were getting wet. Also alot of fuel was pouring out from the pump down under the motor. There even was a leaky fuel line to the carb. Repaced both lines to the carb and even the one from the shut off valve to the fuel filter. Now no leaks. And did all this outside in the cold -20 with the windchill.
As for a spark had the plugs touching bolts on the top and had to look real close while pulling the recoil. Verry small spark from both plugs just to say I could see it.

Oh and another thing I did before I came in for supper. The two rubber boots were loose to the caburator. So I tightend them up real good.
And thank God for Dish Soap my hands were so black from working on his sled. :)

My hands are getting cold just thinking about it!!!!!
-20, hands full of gas, working on steel and aluminum
Your neighbor should go home and thank the Lord he has a neighbor like you, regardless of his 89.00 coil. Might want to get a diaphram and gasket replacement kit for that pump. They get weak with time
Happy New Year to you, Rosanne and the little ones

He got the kit today and I already intalled it in the sled. He lives right across the street from me so it did not take long. With all the fun I am having with his sled I am going to take the V-4 out for a burn. At least it starts with no issues. Even when cold it's not a problem. Yamaha Reliability ;)
Happy New Year to your family too Skinner
RDL, What year is this seld? I will say, that thier have been cases of reported "weak" coils, so I dont want to say thier aint no way the coil could be bad and still spark, but just was saying, most times, they dont do anything when bad.

AL,P it's a 1989 Polaris Indy Sprint 340. I got out with my neighbour ice fishing during the winter. I love burying him with snow at 60-70 mph his top speed. All in fun just have to laugh cause he looks like a snowman by time we get to the truck LOL...:fishing:
And thanks for the replys AL,P
Thanks RDL.
Might want to check the kill switch and key switch, Heard a rumor they like to cause problems sometimes. Maybe one of them, is reaking havic with the power to the coils ect.?
