Question for you gear heads. At a snow show recently and bought a beater, but good running Honda 185 three wheeler for my boys to tear up the woods with. The inside of the gas tank has a rust coating on it, not so that the rust is floating or anything, but enough to concern me for future. What would be the proper way and effective way to get this problem cured? Obviously the tank should come off, but is there an effective acid type solution to pour into the tank to remove the rust?
Thanks guys-

yamajeff,
I also have 2 sleds that have rust in the gas tank. I was told the steps to get it out but I can't remember. I will post it back on here when I get a hold of the guy that told me.

yamajeff,
I called the guy and ask if he would email what he has done with his older sleds that the gas tank was rusted on the inside and here is what he wrote -
I'd drain whatever is in the tank, then fill it with vinegar. Vinegar is a mild acid and will help to loosen the rust. Plan on leaving the vinegar in there for a week anyway. Then go to POR15.com and get a gas tank sealing kit and an extra quart of metal ready. Metal ready is the best cleaner I've ever seen. After I got the tank as clean as I thought was possible I ran the metal ready through and it came out black with crud it removed. After a week or two remove the vinegar and rinse, then put your quart of metal ready in for an hour or two, be careful this is a much more powerful acid. Then rinse well and follow the tank sealing kit instructions.
I will be doing this to the 2 tanks of mine that need rust out of them. The guy has a couple of older sleds and he said this has worked every time for him. He did say the other important thing is to put a gas filter in the line just in case any rust may still be in the tank. Hope this works for you, if you try it.

They make serveral products out their as well for this. I used one on an old motorcycle. ( I think the prodcuct was called keam) its a 3 step process. 1st you use and acid to get all the rust out, then a eching acid to prep the inside of the tank, last you pour in a white goo and roll it around the tank....pore out extra and let dry for a day or 2. worked great for me. not only got rid of rust but gives you a new surface that doesn't rust...Now fast forward 15 years and I really couldn't tell you how it holds up. sold the bike after 3....But was still working well then.

an atv tank like that you could try to dump in a cup or 2 of small nuts, stove bolts, washers, etc and shake it with some diesel fuel for a while . I have done this with larger tanks setting in a wheel barrow . Just be sure to dispose of the fuel in a correct manner in case someone is watching . I ended up useing water to do the final rinse inside the tank and havent had any trouble since .:banghead: A coating of some kind after it is dry might help too .
