Hey guys, wondering what the proper belt deflection is suppose to be? I`m thinking 1 1/4, but not sure? also, how hard should i push down on the belt when checking? And just to be sure I`m doing this right, I lay a flat piece of something over the belt, and that extends across both clutches, and push down on the belt inbetween the clutches, and check the gap, correct? just making sure, because when I checked it last night, I had about 1 3/4 or more pushing medium hard. that seams like alot? thanks AL P

Hi Al - I don't see anything about belt deflection in the service manual. They measure the circumference (52.6-52.9 inches), the width (1.36-1.30 inches), and the height from the top of the belt to the secondary sheave (.08-.12 inches), assuming that your clutches are aligned and the distance from center to center are correct to start with. Are you thinking about track deflection?

Well I was reading a tech artical over at total yamaha, and it was talking about belt deflection and its effects on hole shots, top end speed ect. and it said the belt deflection should be real close to 1 1/4, so i went out to the garage and checked mine, and it was closer to 1 3/4 atleast. So I was trying to figure out if that was an indication that my belt may be stretched or riding to low in my secondary. because i know my center to center is on. and checking the belt deflection, seamed to be the easiest way to check the belt.
another thing thats got me stumped, is i measured the one of the other belts i have, and it measured 51.6, I re measured it several times to confirm, and thats what it is. now when I put it on, my deflection is right on or real close to the 1 1/4. So I`m just trying to get to the bottom of it all. Thanks for the reply. AL P

Make sure your secondary is closed completely or you will get a false reading.
