Any of you guys using aftermarket reeds? I bought a brand new set of Delta 2's last year, have three 660 foot runs on them and they are SHOT!!! Looks to me like the petals are resin rich and weak. Talked to
V-force, they pretty much told me to pack sand.Talking with guys in the world, the Carbon Tech reeds are the biggest bang for the buck on a max4. Any input?

on a stock, un-ported motor I think carbon techs would be more than good. I had them on my srx and had great throttle response out of them.

JOSH, what the hell is a stock, unported motor???,,,,,LOL JK

DAVE, 800 STOCK YAMAHA REEDS WORK THE BEST. I ONCE ASKED DYNOTECH JIM THAT QUESTION, HE SAYS STOCK REEDS MADE MOST HP. NOW I AM TALKING COMPLETE REED/CAGE. I HAD V FORCE FOR MY 96, SEND THEM DOWN THE RD. NOW THERE IS RUMOUR 700 SRX REEDS WORK GREAT. CAN,T CONFIRM. 3:16 (tony)

you'd have to cut to fit those 700 reeds, was looking at that myself. Tony did you sell those vforce or are they on your shelf beside that helix??

Tony, Just change out the petals or?????
I agree on the V-force,,,,,,say bye!!!
Don't have a testimonial yet......But have installed Boysen power reeds...stock cages, boysen pedals. Not excpecting much for peak hp...But hoping to clean up the midrange and see nice crisp throttle responce. On a couple of older yami's I have used them in the past and sure seamed to work well. Not to mention, they are $100 Vs. 3-4 times that for the others.

Heres a stupid question, not intendid to hyjack or anything, but what do the reeds look like and where are they? Everyone says reeds/ reedcages and im tottaly lost. If anyone has a pic that would be great. Sorry, little new to the reed stuff.......:frech32:

The common consensus I get is that the Vforces aren't worth the money for most people unless you got a really really nasty motor then they make a couple hp (so maybe a good idea for you?) I've never tried a set because of the cost, but on my Banshee I've tried 3 or 4 different setups and the best "seat of the pants" running setup I've found was aftermarket pedals on my stock ported cages. I don't know what they made for peak power because I wasn't gonna pay for dyno time to see a .5 hp difference on my quad, but for crispness and throttle response the stock ported cages with pedals ran better than the couple sets of full aftermarket cages I tried.
I'm just running Boyesen pedals on my vmax-4, I haven't taken the time to pull the cages back out and port them yet, takes me about an hour per cage and I doubt there is really that much gain there. I'll see if I can find some picture of some cages I did.

They go in the cylinder where the carb boot attaches. A guy has a set posted here in the classifieds that he is selling on e-bay with pics. Check it out, I think his name is crazykid. Talking with Olaf Aaen last Saturday down at his shop, he told me the carbon tech reeds made the most hp on a dyno for the max4 motor. It seemed to me that the V-force did improve the throttle response but that would not have much to do with hp. I would think it improves the torque which is acceleration. Funny that the Bender F-111 motor had stock reeds in it, IMO, that pretty much sums up Tony's and Dyno Jims analysis.
MOF, you must have been typing the same time I was, I agree with you, I think I will find a set of Carbon Tech reeds, plant them into the stock cage and get in on a dyno. Would like to see what you did with your cages.
Josh, do you mean cut and fit the petals into the max4 cage?

JOSH, DAVE, etc THE STOCK VMAX 800 CAGE AND THE STOCK 700 SRX CAGE ARE SAME SIZE. THE DEFFERENCE IS INSIDE WHERE PEDALS ARE AND OVERALL SIZE OF REED OPENING. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A POST ABOUT THIS ONCE ON HERE. IF I DID ANYTHING I WOULD CHANGE TO CARBON VIBER REEDS BUT STILL RUN STOCK CAGES. JOSH, V FORCE LONG GONE. FUNNY THING HERE IS A BOUGHT THEM NEW FROM HAUCK, BUT ONE OF THEM SMELLED OF GAS FUMES. INTRESTING !!!!!!! 3:16 (tony)

FOR SALE:
One set of 4 f'd up V-force Delta-2 reeds and cages. Needs new petals, they told me the replacement petals are two hundred bucks. That equates to $66.66 for a 660 run. Amazing how the numbers shake out, thats about 10 cents a foot for drag racing,,,,LOL EXPENSIVE RUNS.
Will trade for a set of Carbon Tech petals :smilielol
Tony, mine did'nt stink when I got them,,,,LOL.

Skinner, I know I took pictures when I did the last set of cages but I must not have saved them on my computer. Basically what I did is I took the pedals I was using and layed them on the cages to see how far I could take the openings out, they don't need much to seal. After I cut the openings out as far as I could I just blended everything in and smoothed it out. I took quite a bit of matierial away from the bridges as well but I was told it was important not to knife edge anything so I kept everything rounded. After I was happy with the shape I bead blasted the inside which gives them a nice consistant texture. Seemed to work well, you just have to be careful to not knick the sealing surface.

Good info guys,I had asked about the Carbon Techs before and no one seemed to know. Now I know it would seem to be a decent upgrade,Would spacers do anything else(help or hinder)?
Skinner
01-03-2007, 04:25 PM
Back to theory Bubs. Some guys use spacers for added area, some shorten the carbs to get the slide closer to the piston. Again, you would have to get both set-ups on the same motor with some dyno time. What the results end up to be dont' necessarily mean it will hold true to other motors. Help or hinder could go either way.

Yup I will aggree with the Carbon tech redds being best bang for the $$$ Delta's are a waste of money. I have carbon techs in my SRV now for 3 years with no problems....would like to get some for the V4. The guy I bought my PSI modblasters from a few months ago told me thats what he uses in his 850 V4 with good result and also says dont bother with vforce reeds.

I was at the understanding that the C.T. reeds with spacers would make the mid and low end a bit more crisp with less burble for the triples. Not that the SXR is bad at bottom just that it stumbles a bit,And for the short time I have had it there has not been enough seat time to justifiy the extra expense yet!It is the first thing I have owned that has reeds.:2dontknow

Reed spacers on that SXR engine will help, I forget the specifics but on that motor its something about the reed cages actually sticking in too far and hindering flow to the port(s). I've been told spacers are a good idea for all the Yamaha non-PV triples because of this, but I think on the majority of motors the spacers do next to nothing, I have three or four sets of them in different thicknesses in my attic collecting dust, never saw any gains.

I BELIEVE V FORCE REEDS WILL WORK ALSO, BUT MOST LIKELY ON 218 hp, HOWLERS, 10,200, FIRING AT 180. BIG HP PRO STOCK MOTOR. 3:16 (tony)

Tony, if the cages on a 700 and 800 are the same, what difference is there with the reeds??as they would be covering opening the same diameter. would it not be the cages that are different meaning the 700 cages flow better? mabey the 700 cages are and updated 800 cage (ported)??

THATS WHAT I WOULD THINK!!! FROM WHAT I CAN TELL,AND I DON,T THINK I AM COVERING ALL THIS, BUT I HAVE BOTH SETS. TOO HOLD BOTH REED CAGES IN YOUR HAND, THE SIZE IS THE SAME, BUT THE THROAT IS LARGER ON THE VMAX 800 REEDS. NOW I DON,T KNOW WHAT IF THEIR IS ANY GAINS WITH SRX REEDS. I KNOW THERE WAS A POST HERE A LONG TIME AGO. I THINK EITHER INLINE 4 OR HUGH WILSON TRYED THIS. 3:16 (tony)

I was standing in front of a booth that was selling the Delta V-Force reeds at the Novi show last year listening to guys talking about them. It sounds like the Delta 2's weren't very good, that the Delta V-Force 3 reeds were an improvement. No proof, just hear-say.:2dontknow :2dontknow

MOF, I'll let ya know, I just built a new 600 SXR motor and put in s aet of Delta 3's. No time on it yet, can't even test :cussing:
Tony, don't think they will make 10200, they can't stay together at 8350

That sure is interesting that the Bender motor had stock reeds! Maybe it's due to the power it generated it did not need them LOL>>>:4fzfk2:
