View Full Version : Where to wire electric shield?

Bought a new helmet with an electric shield. Dealer wired it in with the hand warmers on my '96 Vmax 800, but now the left warmer is worthless. The grip is OK when the shield isn't plugged in, which make me think that the shield and grip together are drawing too much juice. I seem to recall a thread on this board about this subject in the past, but I wasn't able to find it. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?
I wired mine into the power supply wire for the brake light. I was gonna wire it into the grip warmer/s also, but my hands already get cold pretty easily, so I just hooked it up to the lights..after I got it wired up, I fired up the sled, and watched the light pretty close, and then plugged it in, and the head light did dim slightly, but very slightly, and that was only at idle, soon as I gave it some gas, I could`nt tell the differance..anyway.
under the handlebar pad, you`ll see a plug`in where the brake light switch plugs in, the blue wire is the one that ya wanna tap your +volt supply into, then I just ran the ground, and was all set..

Yup, I agree with Al. I've hooked 5 different sleds up to the brake light power supply and never had a problem.

Make sure you wire it to the Tail light wire instead of the brake light. If you wire it to the tail light, you have constant power, if you use the brake light, you only have power when the brake is applied.
I hear what your sayin..I almost did that..LOL
but ya gotta wire it to the power supply "to" the brake light switch..in other words..power goes into the switch all the time, but does`nt come out, till ya sqeeze the brake, so splice in the power wire to the switch. on the feed side...
not sure on all years, but on my 95, it was the blue wire..

I wired my visor into the blue and black wire right up near the Intrument panel and all seems to be working.

Thanks for the help guys. I kinda remembered someone suggesting wiring with the tail or brake light before, but wasn't sure. AL, makes total sense to wire onto the feed side so you have full power until squeezing the brake, which I never do anyway!:muahaha:
Thanks again!
Hey, I see you have a 96..cool..
I just drew up a pic right quick, to show exactly where I tied in my + volt supply..as you can see, when the switch is activated (giving it the brake) the green with yellow stripped wire gets power, the green and white wire, basicaly leads back to the brake light... so just tap in, to the solid green, or blue for your + volt supply..and you, your right, when ya do sqeeze the brakeon that rare ocasion, it`ll pull a little juice away from your visor, LOL

Hey Al... Thanks for the diagram! That should really make it an easy switch over for me.
After a bit more searching around, I finally found the other posts I had seen on this topic. I had to search for "heated shield" instead of "electric shield". Duh...:beathead: You say "Tomato" I say "Unprocessed ketchup".
Thanks again!
