Yes you can switch, just either drain the reservior or at least run it down low before you switch over. I run plain ole Yamahalube 2-s. Its a better oil than most give it credit for.

I'm surprised so many of you pay for the big name stuff, especially for trail riding. I pay 12 bucks a gallon for the Yammalube.

I use Yamalube 2-S and have for years. If it's good enough for Yamaha, it's good enough for me.

I used Yamalube for years with no problems, just can't stand the smell.
Tried Amsoil with good results, then got a killer deal on some Klotz.
OK, I will go against the grain here. I use Amsoil. This is the 1st sled though, all my other Yamaha's I use yamalube with out any problems.

I have been running Torco 100 Synthetic with no problems. Pat Hauck turned me onto this stuff years ago for the Mighty Max. I still run 2-S Yamalube in my piped SX-R's

i just wanted to bring this post back to life,
I'm having a hard time paying $25 a gallon for oil when I just blow it out my exhaust pipe anyway. My sled is set up for pre mix so I dont really have a problem with it sitting in my tank getting old.
so really I've talked to some big sled heads and there not convinced on the whole syntactic oil fad and neither am I.
Yamaha lube, Polaris gold, ski-doo goo who gives a sh$t if it's not Texaco or Exxon its just a spin off of the original. Kinda like a Mazda to ford and we all know they aren’t as good as the original. Yamaha don’t make oil they make a lot of other crap but not oil they only approve some other oil and put there name on it and charge 50% more for doing so.
So with that little gripe off my back what other choices have you guys been just to embarrassed to share?
How about Wal-Marts 2 stroke mix 6.86 a gallon that’s ¼ the price I’ve been paying for something that’s probably the same crap with the name Yamaha lube on the label. And I bet you to haven’t had a bit of problem with it either.
Yikes,
I personaly would`nt run any oil that cost $7 a gallon.
As I said before, I`m Currently running golden spectro at about $4 something a quart.
now when it comes to the gear box,and the chaincase, I would like to switch over to synthetic in them. but right now, I just have regular 80/90 in them.

JUST WONDERING SO IF I RUN INTO ON THE TRAIL WITH AN OIL RELATED FAILURE AND YOU NEED HELP I WILL PASS YOU UP AND KEEP GOING. JUST HAD TO GET THAT OFF MY BACK! NO OTHER CHOICES IM EMBARRASED ABOUT TO SHARE, BUT APPEARNTLY YOU HAVE SOME DUE TO THE INFO YOU JUST GAVE EVERYONE

KOTL what do you think of the Yamalube in a non-power valved motor? My vmax is running psi quads so now at a higher rpm and I wonder about the mineral based oil "breaking down". I've always run Amsoil in my srx's and viper but I was'nt sure if I wanted to switch the vmax over.

I use Yamalube. It is made for Yamaha By EXXON (esso in canada) and no it is not the same oil as exxon.Yamaha has thier own blend. In my premix racesled I use yamalube "R".

I would'nt run CHEAP oil, as far as Wal Mart, I would'nt get a pair of socks there if they gave them away. Just a personal thing. BIGRUBBA, might want to look internally sometime, may change your mind when ya see a BIG RUBBA stuck in your ports. If you really want to get the low down on oil, talk to VVmax. He has a lot of valuable info on different lubricants

I run Yamalube, 2-s in the sled, 2-r in the quad, and 4-s in the RX-1. Have always had very good luck, don't plan on running Wal-Martlube anytime soon, lol.

JMINOR, YAMALUBE IS A GOOD OIL OTHERWISE YAMAHA WOULDNT SELL IT AND RECOMMEND IT DUE TO THEM HAVING TO PAY FOR ANY WARRANTY CLAIMS AGAINST THEM FROM THERE DEALERS. RUN WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD AS LONG AS IT IS A KNOWN GOOD LOW ASH CONTENT OIL THAT YOU CAN RELY ON WITHOUT SACRIFICING RELIABILTY. YAMALUBE HOLDS UP FINE TO THE XTRA RPM WE ARE DISCUSSING. THANKS GUYS
I guess at $2+ a gallon for gas...oil seems to be cheap. Somebody here said riding a vmax4 is like driving a old muscle car.....I thought that was a great way to look at it. I may get flamed for this, But if you are so worried about money...why are you riding this gas hog? No way I would chance running the cheap stuff. I mean I won't just throw money around, But practicality went right of the window with this sled.......

So nobody has tried anything else?
and you stick with the expensive stuff only cause it has worked in the past and you're going to stick with it .
That's cool, for the record I've only run the expensive stuff also, I usto run the Polaris Gold in a quad I bought in 99 I owned for 3 years. and the guy I sold it to continues to run it and it still runs strong even for his 13 year old son. I know he ran it way harder then I ever did. This from a engine the forums told me to tear down the day you bring it home and replace the piston in it. it's already worn out.
I was looking for some input on the guy who runs the cheep stuff and has for years with out problums. Not a bunch of flames about how much there willing to pay for peace of mind.
how about Inject 2 stroke oil? I've never heard of it but thats what I was told to run from the guy who built my sled.
anyone run it? it's a little cheaper like

i agree, the majority of people (in every forum I've ever visited) just love to spend big for peace of mind, myself included....but in all honesty i've never experienced an engine failure I can DIRECTLY blame to oil quality...my brother bought 10 gallons of some old (1970's) Evinrude outboard oil at a rummage sale, run in his 1987 polaris indy 600 from day one, runs this thing hard, engine never had to come apart yet (and shows no signs of needing to)with over 13,000 miles on it.....but what really burns me is people who tell me to run amsoil cause it's the best!!! you could probably come to that conclusion running damn near any oil!!!!!

Well fella's I've run cheap oil (that meets or exceeds oem standards) all my life.Dirt bikes, jetski's,snowmobiles, even in my two stroke houseboat motor (thats run hard pushing 2 tons all summer)I run my stuff hard and haven't as of now (knock knock ..wood)had any engine related failures.I'm sure that if I was a racer of pro..a leading edge oil would be needed. I ran yamalube in several motors and did my topend jobs with the same wear as the topend jobs done with "cheap oil"
I also am a poor bastard, most all "toys" I've owned were bought because they were blown and I needed to rebuild them. From crank failure to melted pistons...I know for a fact that the owners of some of my toys ALWAYS used top notch oil,yet there motor went. Now I know it could be from many unrelated issues. But I've again had no issues in the last 10 years.
I am not trying to push the cheap oil just saying I've had good luck and hope it continues

thats what i'm talking about.
even the cheap stuff exceeds OEM standards...so why pay 45-60 a gallon for something thats only a little beter?
that was the whole point I was trying to make.

I've never been one to sacrifice quality because of price. That being said, I don't like to throw money away to make a show of wealth either. I've always trusted Castrol 2 stroke oil since I had my first Yamaha bike at age 13. I can buy 12 litres at Costco (Price Costco in the US I think) for a bit less than $30 Canadian. I haven't looked this year so the price might not be accurate but I did buy a couple gallons of Amsoil synthetic last year on sale for $30 for 4 litres and put it in the Big Max. I didn't ride much but I'm not sure there was much difference. It still smoked a lot and there was no "pretty" smell about the exhaust. It didn't turn over any easier at -20C. As for less wear on the engine, I can't argue with anybody's claims. Some guys here have over 20,000 miles on their engines with Amsoil and never had the heads off. That's increadable!!. The previous owner of my sled used Castrol from day 1 and I continued. When I stuck a piston due to a cold seizure 3 years ago, I bought 4 new pistons because the engine had 7500km (4700 miles) on it so I figured it was time for fresh pistons. I still have 3 of them sitting on the shelf. They showed no signs of wear at all. This engine has had Aaen pipes on it since new spinning at 8800 to over 9000 rpms. Would synthetic be better? Maybe. But I'm not going to spend 3-4 times the money on oil when my engine looked this good inside with regular stuff. This is just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.
Happy New Year!
