View Full Version : Why do belts fail so often in the Vmax?

So far this year I have rode 650 miles and eaten up 2 belts(not yammi belts)I have been working on my clutching making sure thats not at fault seems to be working good, got Yammiegods set-up now.

When belts fail is it caused buy to much heat? or horsepower?, all my riding is with my buddy and he has a T-Cat and yet had to replace a belt in 4 years. In 4 years of riding I have gone through probaly 6 belts in 2300 hard miles.

The only thing different with my sled verses others is when I bought this sled I heard about these sleds were hard on belts, so I modified my clutch cover. My cover has sides on it that go down to the centerline of the clutches, so if I blew a belt it would destroy anything else. Could this be the problem? too much heat and cant escape? If I could find a stock cover and try it I would. I dont want to cut my sides off and find out thats not the problem.

Any ideas?

I only went through two belts in 2000 miles. Always bought Yams 8BU belts, never an issue. Most problems are caused by heat or misalignment. I don't believe in cheap or aftermarket belts unless your racing, even then we use the 8BU's. I have an extra stock belt guard, you can have it if you pay the freight.

I agree, most of the time I get 2500-3000 miles of hard trail use out of an 8BU belt.

I agree with Skinner and Vmaxrules, By the yamaha 8BU belt. They should last atleats 2000 miles, Unless your drag racing alot,..
I have a Like New 8bu Belt for sale only 93 miles on it... 50 dollars +shipping, in classified section..

AGRESIVE CLUTCHING ON A VMAX 4, YOU NEED A SOFT COMPOUND BELT. THATS WHY THE 8BU BELT IS ALL THAT WORKS. THE 89A YAMAHA BELT WAS DISCONTINUED, AFTERMARKET BELTS ARE JUNK. THEY ARE BOTH HARD COMPOUND. THE 8BU BELT IS SOFT. NOW WITH THIS SAID. ONES CLUTCH MAINTENCE COMES INTO PLAY. ( center/center-offset ) 3:16 (tony)

Yammie,
Thats the one thing I have not checked, what is the center to center dim?
and do you think that the cover I have modified is causing harm to the belt life?

(14.3-14.4 in ) MEASURE FROM CENTER OF BOTH CLUTCH BOLTS.
I DON,T KNOW WHAT YA DID TOO YOUR COVER, BUT I DOUBT IT. 3:16 (tony)

AND LET ME ADD A 8BU WILL LAST FOR DRAG RACING. I HAVE USED ONE BELT ON BOTH MY VMAX 800 FOR ICE AND GRASS. BELT LIFE IS ALL IN ALIGNMENT. I AGREE A BELT CAN BE WORN OUT FAST WITH SLIPAGE WHICH CAUSES HEAT AND GLAZEING. BUT TOO DESTROY A BELT IS CLUTCH ALIGNMENT. 3:16 (tony)

Make sure you check your clutch offset above and below the center line of the PTO and jackshaft. You may need shims under your motor mounts to align it properly.

If you closed in your belt guard it would reduce the air flow and make your clutches run hotter and probably reduce your belt life.

All these folks are telling the truth for sure! In 800km last year I went through 4 aftermarket belts! (Dayco, Ultimax 2,3 etc.) Bought an 8BU over 2000km since and not a single problem!!

I find its better if you turn the belt inside out and run it that way. Or about 3000 rubber bands stretched way out will do in a pinch.:muahaha: :drink1:

Your right Tony, lots of subjects have been beat to death. Problem is, ya get new faces signed up and they have not been invovled with all the debate issues. Best thing IMO, is to answere the questions the best ya can and leave all the BS somewhere else. I'm sure I asked some dumb ass questions when I signed up,,,probably still do. Every body was kind enough to help me out, including you. Thats what its all about

If Anyone thinks that there will never be re-dundant questions on a forum is out for a rude awakening. Even with postits and "Read here first!!!" there will always be duplicates.

HERE IS THE DEFFERENCE, WHEN THE QUESTION GETS ANSWERED IN THE FIELD WITH ONE BLOWING AFTERMARKET BELTS ONE AFTER ANOTHER, I GUESS ITS TIME TOO TRY SOMETHING ELSE. 3:16 (tony)

Yea they really take some serious abuse. Ive seen the 95 600 that we have chew through the cheapies too. Yammie knows how to make some serious hardware. Hell the motor in my car is built by them! 3.2l with 240hp and 240tq out of a small v8 is some pretty serious power.

Well Iam up here in the Keweenaw so far Ive rode 450 miles and no problems. (with the 8bu belt) Iam even getting 2MPG better!!(no belt slippage). In the 4 year Ive been riding with my buddy in his T-Cat I could never get close to him in fuel mileage, but now Iam getting the same or one time I took a gallon less than him.

I wish I did this sonner I would have save alot a money!!

No more ignorance!!
