I have a question.

The drive axle in my 92 Vamx-4 is approximately 1 1/16". I believe Yamaha went with a 1 1/8" axle in the 800's.

Extrovert drivers are listed as, 1" for early Yamaha, and 1 1/16" - 1 1/8" for late Yamaha. Which is the best one to use? The 1" will obviously fit tight (too tight?) and the larger ones will obviously be a looser fit (too loose?).

Thanks,

Ken

Thanks Al, you're right on the money.

I'm a bit off. I went to where my sleds are stored and measured the shaft, it's 1", it's my Viper that has the heavier shaft, 1 1/16".

I just received their new catalogue today and the price jumped up to $115.00!!

They are still shown online at the lower price but when you click on them to add them to your cart they come up at the higher price.

Ken, I just ordered some wahl anti ratchet drivers from Rich less than a month ago - $75.00 ea. These are nice drivers. Anyway he said to go with the 1" and so did someone else from the site after I questioned them about my concerns with them breaking as theyre pressed on, apparently theyre designed for this, so well see. I have the 1-1/16" shaft and Im picking up my press to be able to put them on this weekend.

The extrovert drivers are 1" and press on to the shaft. If they were any looser, you'd spin them on the shaft with the power and weight of the big max. There are sprockets available that work with your stock drivers. I have friends that use them in their mountain sleds and they work well. If you are staying with the same size driver, the sprockets are a more economical way to go. If you are changing driver size, it's probably cheaper to go with extroverts.
Ken, in your case where your shaft is 1", I'd suspect the drivers for you would have a smaller hole yet. Just my thoughts.

Ian - I believe what is referred to as the 1" drivers actually have a 15/16" hole size. I would guess that the drivers for the 1 1/16 to 1 1/8" shafts have a 1" hole size. I've seen the cheaper sprockets but I like the extrovert style driver better. With the sprockets you end up with 6-drivers (I guess you could remove the outer two sprockets).

SRV540 - I called Royal Distributing today and they told me that they changed suppliers and that's why the price has gone up. I had been intending to pickup a set at their Barrie store.

IZZ - I'll be ordering a set from Rich.

Thanks for the input guys!

I'm not positive but I would guess that they would because I believe that they first used the heavier shaft in the 1994-750.

The larger shaft is about double the price, the speedo bearing is the same part number, the lower chaincase bearing is a different part number, and the lower chain case seal is the same part number. You would probably need to upgrade your drivers too.

whats wrong with the stock 1" drive shafts? I dont remember reading anything about them twisting or anything. so why go thru all the expense of changing to the 1 1/16? Just thought I`d ask, there must be some kind of advantage? no? AL

Al i broke two of them on my mtn. max 4 so i was thinking if i went to a 1 1/16" it might be stronger. There must be a reason they went to a bigger shaft???

Snowcrosser named Tuomo Forssell made titanium ones to the 750 Vmax4. He raced it in snowcross in mid 90´s. I had pics of it in the old forum. I´ll dig deep in my files and try to find those pics again.

Those must cost some serious $$$

EDIT here they are-->
