I'll try to explain how I install the bigger gas tank. It was easier for me on my mountain sled because it wasn't a stock machine. Well here it goes;
STEP 1: Cut L-shaped bracket off the steering colume support. Pic 1
STEP 2: Take heat gun and warm up the bottom of the gas tank were the heat exchanger sticks up on the right side of tank. As it warms push it in to make clearance for the exchanger, then cool with compressed air or water. Next heat up the two 45 degree upper corners and push it into the steering colume support (it hardly needs to be altered) that should be its final position. Once again cool. Now mark the mounting slots on the back of the gas tank. Drill the holes at the back of the slots (towards the tailight) make sure you don't hit heat exchangers. Install mounting bolts, get them from your dealer for any 97-02 SRX,SX-R or V-MAX that's what kind of gas tank it is. Or just make them yourself. Pics 2 & 3
STEP 3: Install a second fuel pick-up just use one like the original one buy drilling 1/2" hole in tank next to first one. Tank should be done. Pic 4
STEP 4: I installed a 97 V-MAX 600 seat (a SRX,SX-R would also work) It maybe a little long for standard MAX, but should work fine on a mountain max. You maybe able to shorten overall length by notching the gas tank where the seat mounting ears slide in. You will have to trim your tank covers like in pic's 4 & 5. Also I don't know if the fuel guage and the sending unit are compatable.

It was an SRX tank, but any 97-02 tank from a SRX,SX-R, or V-max will work.
