I've got a 91 Dodge Heavy Duty 3/4 ton 4X4. The engine is the stock 5.9 Cummins with an air to air intercooler. Power is suppose to be 160hp with 400 ft lbs of torque. It's always been a good engine with ok power and since I drive it empty 90% of the time, I never looked into upgrading it. My friend has a chipped 01 and he can't come close to me for fuel mileage. I get 23-25 mpg empty. I found a website, www.dieselinjection.net and did some reading that they have on the B series Cummins. These guys have been modifying Cummins engins for just about 30 years. For mine, they recommended a turbine housing change and injection pump adjustments. The turbine housing cost $201.46 US plus shipping and they sent the instructions for adjusting the pump. They estimated my hp would increase from 160 to about 250 and my torque from 400 ft lbs to about 630.
I did the mods and all I can say is HOLY F**K!!! What a change. It's not even close to being the same truck. The turbo spools up at 1500rpm now instead of 1750-1800rpm. It spins faster under full boost giving a higher boost reading. The engine use to run out of steam at 2900rpm. Sometimes it would pull 3000rpm in a lower gear when I was accelerating. I was lucky if it would pull 2900rpm at 100mph in 5th gear. Now it will rev freely to 3200rpm(that's were I back out of it). It also pulled 3200rpm in 5th at 110mph and was still climbing. Last weekend, with a 20' gooseneck stock trailer on with 2 horses in it, I was able to pass cars at will in 5th gear at 60-70mph. Fuel mileage seems to have increased a bit when empty and is still about the same when loaded. The engine runs smoother and seems quieter in the cab. All this for around $300.00 Canadian plus the cost of the boost and pyro guages(a must when you up the fuel input levels over stock). My buddy has a chip, Big Bore intake, and 4" straight pipe exhaust on his 01 and he doesn't think it has anything on mine.
These guys also have stuff for Powerstroke and Duramax as well. It's definately worth the visit to their site. The friend who told me about them bumped his NTC 400 Cummins up to 500hp for less than $600.00US.

Ian, have you ever given any thought to adding a propane injection kit????? Bully dog sells em and they are pretty resonable, My friend has their 80hp kit on his 93.....works like a charm!!!

My brother's best friend was telling me about propane last weekend at my neice's wedding. He has a 93 Chevy dually that he works pretty hard. He has water injection on it now and says the propane was next. I heard an old guy talking about propane in the early 90's but thought he was joking. I'll ckeck into it myself but I don't think I'll need it. These 91's had a pretty fragile transmission if you didn't take care of them. I'm sure I could blow up the gearbox or clutch if I drove now like I did when I was 19.
