View Full Version : Still another coolant leak with the head....

Last week had a cylinder giving a coolant leak. Found it was a warped head and a machine shop milled .006 off the head. Installed, and still had a coolant leak. I think my cylinder has a deep spot in it that I can feel with my finger when running along the top.
What are my options? Can I take the jug to a machine shop, and have them mill some off? I am guessing I should have both jugs for that side done?
Please share advice.
Thanks

I'm no engine builder, but there are a lot of them here who will correct any misinformation. I'm only speaking as a CNC machinist for the last 26 years.
Have you done a compression check on all four cylinders? They should all be the same, or close. That might tell you if there is a bad spot on the cylinder. I would take the other head and have .006" milled off to make it the same as the first head. If you have one cylinder milled, you should have all four milled the same amount so that they are equal. You will need to know how much was milled off so you can compensate with the gasket. When I was a kid we had a Ski-Doo 294 Silver Bullet that my brother had the heads milled and piped. We blew head gasket after head gasket, until he had solid copper head gaskets installed, which solved the problem. I have no idea if a solid metal head gasket is available for the Vmax-4.

Got my problem narrowed down a step further......
Took heads off, and found a .020 height difference between the cylinders bolted on the sled. The leaky one being .020 lower.
Took the other heads off on the good non leaking side to confirm, and they are set at the exact same heights of one another. Thus making sense and not leaking.
So thats my problem. When I torque the heads down, that gap is causing enough of a difference to leak because of the offset.
Now, could I have caused this problem? I was trying to remove stuck cylinder stud bolts, and I hit them repeatably with a brass hammer. Could I have compressed the base gasket .020?
Please tell me what my next step should be?
Thanks
