what is the advantage of running flat side carbs? do they require other modifications? any insight or tips are great.

What are you installing them on, the Vmax-4's came with them from the factory.

i have a 1996 vmax 800. I got these carbs off ebay that are is good shape and are flat sides. What makes them a flat side carb vs. regular carbs?

The throttle slide is flat as compared to round. Your 96 should have flatslides on it stock unless someone changed them.

Flatslides are supposed to be more responsive, round slides are supposed to make better top-end. I like the flatslides.
