Okay, this should be fun to see the reply's here!!

Got the following motor out of the 94ST Phazer2 "donor sled" to put in my wifes 93 Phazer2 since we lost the rod bearings, pto side 2 weeks ago.
This motor per the odometer has 2455 miles on it & shows roughly 120psi on both cylinders. Ran & sounded okay, but the sled was really roughly treated cosmetically.:cussing:

So, I have not removed the reeds yet to see how the pistons look from the sides but have looked down the plug orifice. Pistons look real black, its been running way fat from what I can see, which is good, I guess.

The question: Should I pull the heads to check the pistons etc since its out & easy to work on right now or just leave it closed & tight??

I have new head gaskets but, frankly, am debating whether I should pull the heads or not.:2dontknow

Will be putting in new boysen reeds & the carbs from the 93 so that I have the jetting for the DG pipe that was on the 93. Will also use the 93's coils, starter, recoil & fan assembly shrouds etc. as all of those items seem to be in much condition & are better looking than what I pulled off this 94.
While this motor is absolutley filthy, I figure I will stay with the oil pump that is on it & just clean the thing up.

Will be back on this project Sun, so.............what are the thoughts here??

Hey, Mom always said there were no dumb questions.........just dumb people... LOL !!:4fzfpi:

Thanks, Rob

I'd do a visual inspection through the intake and exhaust ports first and let that be the deciding factor on whether or not to pull the heads. With the motor in a bench you should be able to get a pretty good look inside.

:agree: :agree: :agree: If it aint broke, don't work on it 'till it is. If the pistons aren't scarred up, let it be. It may have been jetted fat from day 1 and never been hot. The odometers aren't always truthfull. May have had a broken cable for a while. Just my thoughts.

Keep in mind it's a fan cooled and it will have a different wash.

Hey 4with4: I agree on the speedo cable, though, this one was hooked up, working & by the looks of the amount of dirt & sh&& that was down under the drive belt, they sure didnt change that cable in the last few years. Maybe the housing, who knows.

Anyhow, here are some pics of the pistons I took last night. Finally got after the engine as the rest of the sled is now "bits & pieces" ..LOL

Any comments on how the pistons look??
