Got 2 sleds home this weekend. One will be the base for my "powder-boondocker" project I will be building...or attempting to build!!
Was after the 93 SX & had to take the 89 Exciter in a package deal only.
Actually not too bad a deal as I got a complete set of "plastic" for the 87-90 Exciter's so have some stuff to play with for painting etc. & a box of misc Exciter parts & some spare struts.l!
As you can see both sleds have been converted to 136" skids.
Interestingly, the SX has a Vmax4 ST skid from a 95 as I was told.
It will be available as I will be using a RX-1 skid!!
The 89 actually is a bit better cosmetically but thats okay as I will probably just sell it outright.
I will be tearing the SX down to the frame & trying to stuff the 600 that has a Hauck Big Bore & twin pipes into the small SX chassis.:3speechle
Here are some pics of the Exciters after I cleaned them a bit Sat:

So the 93 SX motor area is roughly 27-28" wide.
The 97 Vmax SX donor sled as pictured has a motor area of roughly 35"
This will be fun...stuffing that 600 big bore with the twin pipes into the 93 SX
"narrow body"
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm?????:2dontknow Should be fun!!
Am also hoping to put a bigger fuel tank on the 93 Sx.
Could be a wild project..fortunately I am not in a rush. If this thing hits the snow by late spring 09 I will be happy.!!:4fzfpi:
Will be parting out what I do not use from the 97 Vmax SX too. At this point, am focusing on motor & possibly the driveline. Wont know until I tear that one down in Sept or so.
Rob, that looks like a great project....what do you figure that Hauk 600 is putting out with the twins on thier? I have always had a soft spot for the Exciters, (owned 3 over the years). a really light chassis with a worked 600 that thing should have very little trouble getting where you want to go.:3speechle ..sounds like the RX-1 skid is going in, Can't wait to see how this all turns out, keep us posted and take lots of pics.

Hey guys, thanks for the thoughts:653:
3ft: Re HP of the 600. I am told by the former owner who has a good reputation in this area for being on the "conservative" side when doing motors etc. that this 600 with the Huack big bore to 700, the special reeds, twin pipes etc, that it should be putting out between 125-135HP. Have been told that it turns to 7,800 rpm real nice & has LOTS of bottom end torque which is what I am after for a off trail "boondocker". Not interested in high speed stuff here. 10-40mph, thats where this thing will be running alot. Probably wont go over 70 when I am done!! But hopefully it will "crawl" real nice in & around the trees & clear cuts etc!!:653:
I agree on the Exciters, I had a 87, 88,90 & 92 before I went to the Vmax chassis in 94. On the "pre pogo stick" Exciters, I had a 76,78 & 80.
So I too have a soft spot for them. I have always felt that these pogo stick Exciters were REAL fun in off trail stuff & nice & light in the powder but, they were a tad under horsed in the power dept. This is why I have been kickin this kind of project around for quite awhile & had been watching for a good deal on a 93 SX chassis & the ideal motor to throw at it. I think I have it.
Now the fun & CHALLANGE of building it!!!:3speechle
I will definately post the updates etc as they happen & will take lots of pics just as I did when I did the Vmax4 upgrade project.

Okay, I am FINALLY attacking this project!!
Started tearing down the "motor doner" sled late this afternoon.
The 97SX Vmax is "losing wieght"..LOL
Removed the hood, seat, front bumper, rear bumper (sold), pipes, handle bars, tank cowl, & clutches. That will be it until Fri when I can get back at it again. But, unless I run into some serious "disassy" issues, I am hoping it will be down to the tunnel before the weekend is done!!
Unless we get snow in the mtns & I have to ride but that is looking unlikely!!:i_need_sn
Here are a few "teardown" pics, Also, NOTE: if some parts are needed from the Vmax SX, such as hood, bumper, bulkhead, ski's, trailing arms, shocks, rear skid...PM me. All for sale. Just keeping motor, driveline, tunnel & handle bars.
