Went back to a couple old posts regarding this & am curious what advise would be put out here today.

I noticed when I got my ole girl fired up Sun to unload & do PM, the primary was not engaging at the normal rpm at first. Had to crack the throttle a bit after the sled was warm. Should engage at 4200-4300, & instead it went to 5000 & still did not grab.

Played the throttle for about a minute or so & finally it came in around 4500.
So, I am guessing it needs a good cleaning which I was planning as the PM.
Got to check the sheaves to make sure they dont have those nasty cracks like I think Roo had awhile back when his exploded.

So, for the cleaning process, what do most guys use. I have read stuff from brake cleaning fluid to WD40 to throw them in the dishwasher ( LOL 3ft!!)
The dishwasher is NOT AN option..my wife is understanding in my toys..but not that understanding!! She would kick my :bum: if I tried that !!

I know that one has to be careful that you dont use an agent that will leave a residue or cause future build up of dust & dirt.

So, as O Reilly so aplty says: What say you guys??

Thanks, Rob

if on the sled...I spray mine down real good with dry-graphite spray..(not on the sheaves of course)..
As far as the sheaves..I lightly in a circular motion, hit them with some 350 grit, then wipe down real good with carb cleaner sprayed on a rag.....seams to really help it hook up good..(I also scuff up the sides of the belt with a wire brush too)..

I should add...that when I do my sheaves..I remove the belt, and wrap the shaft (between the sheaves) real good with a rag, so as not to get any sand paper grit on the shaft..then spray um with compressed air, to be sure I dont still have any sand paper grit left on um..

Could also, remove the primary spring cover, and engage the clutch (slide the sheaves together/belt off), so as to get some graphit on the part of the shaft that would normally be covered when at the rest/idle position..

I took mine off and scrubbed it with WD-40. Then took it to the wash bin and washed it down with dish soap to remove all the WD-40. Then I spray all the rollers, weights and bushings with a dry lube. Seems to work really well.

To remove the clutch I pack it full of grease so that I have to force the puller into it to get it started. I've found that this seams to work pretty well because you are creating hydraulic pressure as you turn in the puller. The clutch usually pops off before you get the puller turned in far enough to touch the crank.

I've used PB Blaster dry lube on mine, seems to work well. I also have found that it works well on snow shovels too. Seems to work better than silicone on the shovels to keep snow from sticking.
