just got back from a trip up in baldwin and as you all know its warm. we went riding in a pack of 5 sunday, only to find little snow on the roads (trails were actually pretty good) and it was 40!talk about riding sleds in just a coat! we had 2 vipers, an rx1, and a nytro, then my 94 vmax 4. needless to say all at one point or another had their engine to warm temp come on, NOT once did mine come on though! this big motor and it was still able to keep cool, must be the heat exchangers that go under the tunnel, where the other ones go under the foot boards or something but i think thats some bragging right there for the old girls, out ran any of them in the pack and never heated up!
go v4!

i think there is an optional upgrade on the vipers to add a heat exchanger for behind the track if im not mistaken? have to lookinto one of those, even though usually you dont ride in 40 degree weather! the snow was just to heavy to kick up onto them as well, still proud of that v4 though!

i wish yamaha would have kept the main coolers in the tunnel,100% more
effective there.

yeah sure does help all that snow kicking up in there! the running boards dont get sufficient amounts unless your riding in some powder or deep snow!

they wanted to create a low center of gravity is why they did it,that along with the engine lowered in the chassis.

geez you wouldnt think that would be that much of a dif, yeah you got a heavy motor, sit that lower but 2 heat exchangers? cmon

so honestly, how hard would it be for me to convert my sled into a 136, it has a ski doo suspension under it just the norm 121, can i just add extenders or do i need to put a whole new skid? how much better would it ride with 144" ?

don't know about ski-poo but yammie you could just get extenders to a
certain point. the longer the better ride i've always heard.

Better???? Top speed is all I care about!!! In that 40 degree weather your talking about I got my vmax 4 so stuck the skis were dangling in the air and not touching the ground. With the 121" 03 rx-1 suspension I just rocked the sled back and forth with the throttle pinned and IT CLIMBED RIGHT OUT! I'm not nocking a 136 or 144 but isn't the top end diminished with a longer footprint????

dunno i'm a 121 lover my self just what i've always heard..lol, yes top end
is usally lost.

Yep, a longer track does ride smoother. Just like a longer wheelbase. Especially in the choppy stuff. Floats better in the soft stuff. There is a trade off though. Takes away some top speed, and you don't turn as sharp. The longer tracks, like the 144 and 151 and now the 159 and 169 inch units use to be terrible to turn around. Polaris started putting a slight bend in their rails at the 136 mark. On hard pack, the back end of the track is about 1" off the ground. Doesn't affect the deep snow aspect but sure makes a difference in turning. I think most manufacturers are doing this now.

yeah i read on track usa or something that the rails are bent that way they still act like a 136 or w.e. on the hard packed, thats a good idea! i was thinking the better ride just like you said because of the wheel base idea, i dont really care much about top speed i dont race any just ride good, and im looking for a nice project to work on this summer:) modding my first v4 lol so if i went to 136 or 144, its probably just as easy to find a whole new skid as it is to do rail extentions correct? i have access to machine shop so making the parts shouldnt be extremely hard they are pretty good there, we usually have them make us wear bars and stuff for cheap hah

Mine was an st right from the get go. I just wanted a better ride. I put a skid out of a 97 MM 700. Changed out the front spring with the original one because of the weight difference between the two sleds. Spaced the mounting points and used longer bolts. The newer Yamaha sleds came in 141 and 144 as well. Some guys are using RX1 skids. That monoshock skid with remote adjustment that came out around 05 would be a nice choice.
Good Luck!

I have an 2002 viper as well and put an srx rear heat exchanger on before I did anything else. Like in the first 300 miles and have never overheated with it. takes less 30 minutes and 4 rivets plus cost of rear heat exchanger. Well worth it even if only running a single pipe

brian102,
If you want I could e-mail you a dxf file of the extensions I made for the 144 extensions for my M-10. Give the machine shop an idea. I can't say if it rides smoother as I never rode this sled when it was 121" but this thing really hooks up now being 144" and doesn't fishtail or side slide in the corners.

keeping my thread going here, has anyone ever had a cylinder leak around the spark plug? i had oil on the front of my cylinder and it appears its coming from the spark plug? yikes! i think the threads are a little messed up in it so maybe we can have a shop put a helicoil in it and be better? does anyone have a headgasket i can buy from them, gotta take the head off and take it in, if you guys think, i dont think that cylinder is leaning out any its mostly tan there might be a little grey on part of the plug but not much!

I don't think I would want to see any gray on a plug. It usually is part of your piston!!!

thought that just means a little on the lean side? if its pushing out oil im assuming it might be pulling in a little air as well?
its that raidiator stickin out there in the wind that keep these sleds cool the new sleds do not have this
