Thanks for the info Shark. Talked to a guy this spring that had a 97 Mountain Max for sale in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. According to him it had the vin number for the first one built that year. Never asked where he bought it. To bad it was three days journey and a boat ride away.

It's on the right hand side of the tunnel near/below where the front of the seat meets the fuel tank cover.
Since there seems some interest I added totals to the list. Keep in mind numbers are approxement as we have no idea as to the ending vin numbers for each year.

Just picked up a 93 ser # 1304. That makes my '93's 1286 and 1304 only 18 apart in production. The 1304 should make a change on the list. Both are canadian models if that makes a difference.

it would be cool to see how many of each year is still around and where ,or find over and under numbers to the ones we already have, just thought i would add that.

There are some that don't like giving out there Vin# and this is understood. Especially in present times with identy theft and all the other nogood crap that happens thru the internet and emails. I don't know if it could happen where someone could lay claim to your sled just by having the vin number but you never know.
And some sleds might have a history to them that the present owner doesn't want to deal with even though it was no fault of there own. Stolen and sold several times. I have seen a couple guns like that.
On the flip side it would be intersting to know how many are left. Alot of sleds have gone to the scrap yard.
this is obviously not my sled, and not a member here`s sled either..but...the numbers are interesting..
check out the link posted recently, to a 1995 vmax-4 on ebay...the numbers are listed as
8bu-003515
if he listed the numbers correctly..and it is a 1995..that would increase the production from your current total of 1086,, up to about 3414

whats the Difference between the 8BTs and the other ones? Still learning......
The 8BTs were 800cc from 95 to 97. Considered mountian sleds. Came with 136" track with 1" lug, tunnel extension, little lower gearing, and I think different primary spring.
8BXs were 750cc 94 only mountain sleds.
The rest where standard 121" tracks basically but with differences from year to year.

Yah, kinda of creepy yet kind of cool. Maybe Ike would be interested in that sled. It would match the license plate on his 4X4.

It's ok to fair I would say, but I rate things harsh. Mint to me is just assembled out of the crate. Someone put a pro-action rear skid in and well it wasnt a perfect install. There is at least one weld that has failed in the front bulkhead.

So I understand how to follow the above coding of the VIN to determine the years.
But how do you determine what manual goes with what year.
Example;
VX800a covers what year? Im thinking 97??
VX800V covers? Im thinking 95 and 96??
VX750U covers?? Im thinking 94??
VX750S covers? Im thinking 92??
Maybe someone can post what manuals cover what years and help clear this up for me???
Or maybe I am way off base and need more Coffee.....
Thank you,
Bubba...

Tried to find some #s on my 95 parts chassis last night. Were they moved to another location than my 92? I looked this whole sled over and no #s to be had. Came without motor, so I cant check that. Any suggestions? The tunnel may have been removed/replaced at one time because it has been completely stripped of paint.

LOVEMYVMAX. That tunnel sounds to be in all likely hood a replacement tunnel. VERY cool that it has no vin number on it. In my experience with the vintage sleds, as years go by, this sort of thing actually adds value to a sled because of the uniqueness if you will to the collector. Just my opinion, but I personally would take that tunnel/bulkhead assy., put it up somewhere, and forget about it for some passing years. When these were replaced (supposed to have been done by dealers only), the dealer was supposed to punch the vin numbers back in the tunnel with stamping punches, and keep a record of this for the DMV. This was done under authorization. You could now basically drop any engine in that sled now and use the engine vin. for the registation...Rob.

Provided the engine vin matched the tunnel vin from yamaha. This was not the case in ending years of production of the vmax4. So you would risk the chance of duplicate vin's

Haven't heard of a 97 where the motor vin and tunnel matched. Yamaha must have been cleaning up inventory phasing them out. I believe this actually started in 96.

Like said before I wouldn't stamp anything in your tunnel. Keeps it unique. If you where to register it I would go with the VIN on the motor as its the only number on it.

On the first page the 97st starts at 1538 and the update on the last page starts at 1587. Were these unmade?
This was brought to my attention by Vmax-4 and Yammigod. Yammigod has a book that he bought from a dealer. The attached pdf file shows the starting number of the 97MM at 8BT-001587. The fact that the seven or eight known 97MM's all fall between 1587 to 1601. There are only about ten sleds at the most that I have accounted for and two are no more and one has a aftermarket tunnel one it. I've bothered Yamaha's for VIN numbers for a year or so and all I got was a free DVD of the Vmax4 Greg Meyer. Hall of Fame refered me to Greg Meyer who is no longer with Yamaha and Jon Bertolino who wrote the 40th anniversary book. Jon gave the best explination why Yamaha won't release the VIN#'s. They are very litigation wary and don't want some ambulance chasing lawyer saying if they built this many sleds and this many people got hurt..... and so on.
Kind of like the Rhino.
Jon gave me the idea for this thread as this is what he/they did with the 82 Vmax 500 except they track the number to the name of the owner. I just wanted a total.
Now thats more typing than I've done on here in the last 6 months.
