Hey all I m just a Newbie here...I started life in snowmbiling on a 480 Phazer and then a 500 EFI INDY...And the sled I just picked up in 2 Words Stupid Fast...Ladys and Gents This sled just wants to pull up out of the snow and stand on me...The Guy I picked it up from said it is sitting at 125 in compression accross the Board.....And he Ran a 68 MPH at the Local Radar run in the 8th Mile with half throttle...I m still very new at sleding maybe 24 hrs total time in the last 4 years...I need to know this sleds limitations what it will and wont do...I would appreciate the information from some of you old school cool guys out there, with your own personal expereinces on these sleds and easy mods too..Let me know thanks...Have a Blessed New years All..:smiley-12

Welcome to the site! :schild27::schild27::schild27:
That's a big jump from a Phazer! You're going to want to take it easy for a little while. The Vmax-4 is wider so it's more stable, but a lot heavier and obviously more power. You can control the ski lift by adjusting the suspension. If the guy was racing it, it's probably set up to transfer the weight to the back of the sled on takeoff for more traction. You can adjust the front straps to hold the front end down so you can steer better. You can download the service manual from this site. If you have any questions, just ask!
I guess my advice to you would be to take it out in an open field or lake and just cruise around for a little while and get to know your sled. I've heard many stories about guys getting too much sled and going balls-to-the-wall the first time they ride it and get hurt or smash up a good ride.

I need to know this sleds limitations what it will and wont do...
Mark is right. take it easy first, and on to this question ^. What are your limits? Cause you will hit thouse first way before the sleds! lol. Oh, and spend the money and keep good carbides on it. These sleds are to heavy for cheapies, and ice+weight=no turing on icy corners. Enjoy the ridicule you will get on that old pig, cause most people dont know your sitting on an acme rocket that will mess their day up!!:vmax4:
humm..advice for a new rider...somewhat new anyway, and on a vmax4 none the less..
well...be carefull...to say the least!! seriously, you do NOT realise how fast your going, until something bad hapens..seriously man..take er easy for a while, and never, and i do mean NEVER assume, a trail or any other route you`ve rode before, is gonna be the same as it was the last time you rode it......things can be on the trail etc, that were`nt there before!!!, this can, and often does get alota guys in trouble quick..could be a fallen tree, branch, or any other kind of unexpected debri!!
One thing I`ve learned about the vmax4`s since owning one, is it seams as though many other snowmobilers, either have`nt heard of it...or mistakenly think its a very heavy slow pig....
they may be a bit heavy..but slow they are NOT!!! VERY powerfull!!
Keep an eye on the oil, use premium fuel only..and it`ll get you there no problem..very dependable...I dare say, bullet proof!!

Hey all...Ok so after looking it over I ve got a few specs on it as far as whats been done....Ok so AAEN quad pipes...Carbon fiber Reeds its been jetted and only gets about 4MPG at 4 thousand feet ugh although I was told I could squezze 8 out of it....Its had some modification done to the skies they arent off a Yamaha Vmax ...And I believe its got a 148 track on it..And 3 in lugs plus what looks to be a Dual throttle lever setup, Its overall rear suspension is very very tall.....And it engages at 4200 RPMS...Then hold on.....What I ve noticed is that as soon as you launch the fron end starts to lift....However if you ease into it not as bad but as soon as Wide open thorttle it just wants to come on up...Wow really alot of sled and that is an understatement...I take it up this next week for three 3 days and 2 night of Fun.........What better way to spread beer fueled mayhem....Ohh and these Vmax 4s Sound wicked not like a 3 or a 2 a whole different manner of machine..Differnt all around ....My buddy has a really clean little 500 VMAX and this Machine handles Way better than that.....My INDY 500 Handles great and its got aftermarkets skis Ssuspension trailing arms the works and it handles great ..I was suprised to find this handle just as good.....

3" lugs, 148 track, and dual throttle. Sounds like it was set up for mountain riding.
Wow really alot of sled and that is an understatement...I take it up this next week for three 3 days and 2 night of Fun.........What better way to spread beer fueled mayhem
Lots of better ways. Good luck, hope to see you back here.

Why do you say "dual throttle setup"..is it because there are Two cables comming from the thumb lever? if so, that`s normal..one is the cable to the carbs, and the other is the cable to the oil injector..
can you post some pics of this sled??
and hey man, are you saying your gonna be drinking while out riding this thing? I`d really think twice about that...especially being a new rider, and a new rider on a vmax4...
don`t mean to sound like I`m trying to give you a hard time...but we`ve unfortunantly heard, seen etc, some really bad stuff happen on sleds...last thing we want to hear about, is another sledder getting hurt, wether it be you or another guy out riding the same area as you..
Seriously, just take it easy for a bit..not only because of safety issues, but also to check out the sled, and be sure everything is good to go..who knows, you may find a loose ski or whatever..so taking it easy for a bit, would be a good idea for a couple reasons..would really suck to blow er up rght off the batt, because of a oiling issue or something weird..

I believe he is refering to a L/H and R/H throttle for carving. Sounds like who ever had it before really set it up for the mountians.
sloejoegottago,
The Vmax4 isn't the most powerfull sled ever made but powerfull it is to scare the heck out of this guy with 30 winters of experience.
Respect this sled. Sleds don't respect the rider. Make sure you have your head on straight when riding any sled. And enjoy what I feel is one of the greatest sleds ever made.:smiley-12

Hey all....Yea it has a throttle on both sides.....I will post some pics of it I m gonna wax it up first ....And do some more tinkering her and there.....I m not the guy who go gets blitzed up and hammered and then goes and runs wild thru the forests of america spreding doom and Gloom all over the place...I ve had a few almost scenarios happen to me , That could have been life changing both at high speeds, to say the least they were enough to make me change up my riding style alot......From aggressive to almost completely tame...Ugh and its embarising...Hey as a question my Instrument pannel underneath isnt flush with the rest of the Headlight housing......What I mean is i can stick my hand down behind the Gauge cluster and touch the spedo wires....Can this be remedied?.....I was also told I shoud put a lift on the rear....Are these ewxpensive...?

Welcome and just remember going fast with these sleds is easy, it's the slowing down part that can get you.

Your gauge cluster problem should easily be remedied. They are just mounted on a bracket which sometimes becomes loose, bent, or the bolts themselves can rust and break off.
