I'm restoring an old 78 SRX I picked up years ago and powering with an 83 vmax540. I'm using the wiring and cdi that came off the vmax. I believe it has T.O.R.S. I don't have anything hooked up except for the 8 wire CDI and the coil . He's the problem, the engine will fire once like a flywheel hit & miss engine. As it slows down it may hit again and once in a while it might actualy stay running and rev up for about 30 or 40seconds. I pulled the plugs an observed the spark while pulling the engine. As you pull the rope, first it has spark, then at the peak of the pull, the spark stops, then spark restarts as it slows. Does anyone know what the controller box does?(i don't have one but it's in the wiring diag) Can the T O R S be eliminated? Do I just have a bad CDI Box? I ohmed the stator & it checks out ok. Anyone?

DUDE, THERE IS NO TORS ON A 1983 VMAX MOTOR IF IT STILL HAS ORIGINAL CARBS. 84 WAS FIRST YEAR FOR THE TORS ON THE VMAX. THE TORS CAN EASILY BE UNPLUGED AND BYPASSED. 3:16 (yammie tony)

hmm you might have something there... my online manual shows the tors control box too... but im positive my 84 never had it.... heck i dont even have the switchs in the carbs for it... only thing i see that might be a catch is my manual i have on the computer says 84-85

ME HAVE SOMETHING THERE ? NO WAY. lol. 3:16 (yammi tony)
NOTE : I BOUGHT A ENGINE STOP SWITCH OFF YOUR UNCLE THAT WAS OFF A 84, MATTER OF FACT HE TOLD ME IT WAS, I HAD TO BYPASS ALL THE TORS WIRES.

well then how the hell do you explain my lack of tors my 84.... and the lack of a place to plug the controller box into the harness... i guess someone one must have switched the carbs, airbox lid, and wiring harness to the 83 stuff before i got it

by the way yamaha started advertising the TORS in 85.... http://www.vintagevmax.com/85.HTM

now granted i dont have a scan of the 84 brochure but i typed that stuff on the 84 page off of something....
the 86 brochure is also quick to point out the TORS

in any case we are not getting anything accomplished here.....

Tommy, do your carbs have brass "things" (switches truely) that protude at an upward angle from the side opposite where the fuel line goes? if so then those should either be hooked up or bypassed

No carb switches, but the wire harness has the connectors for the carbs (I think) 2 wire black & black white

Ok there are 3 of these connectors, 1 for Key, 1 for stop, and 1 for teather??? must not be for carb, therefore no tors makes sense

yeah there is no TORS on an 84 vmax... if you had a plug for the contoller box it would be a round plug with three wires

So ya tink its the cdi box or the pickup coil. Any idear what the 8 wires do. Seems like alot. 1 ground 1 coil positive w/r brown is the pickup. thats 4 why 4 more?

i'd bet on pickup coil.... but then again i really dont know... double and triple check the bullet connectors for clean-ness and tightness i have seen them look good before and after a cleaning an tightening everything magically works
