Ok, recently my transmission has not been functioning properly. I have a V6 Chevy Beretta with a 3spd auto transmission . Over the summer it was not shifting properly, it was getting stuck in 2nd and not shifting to 3rd. I had the fluid flushed and put a new filter kit on, it seemed to have solved the problem of the transmission not shifting properly but now when I am going from Park to Drive the tranny doesnt seem to be hooking up with drive, it acts as if it is in neutral. Is the tranny shot or does this sound like a simple problem. When it does hook up (which is most of the time) the car drives fine, shifts properly, etc. It isn't doing this all the time, but I don't want to take it to a shop, describe what is going on and have them "check it out" and tell me that the tranny is shot and needs to be rebuilt if it really doesn't need to be. Looking for some possibilities of what may be causing the tranny not to hook into drive, any ideas?

Have you checked the fluid level? Remember that the car must be idling while cheking the fluid level. First start the car, let it warm up to normal temperature, then go slowly through the gears, from park to the last gear and back 2 times, then again the park, then check the level.

I just had the fluid drained and filled, I'd hope that they filled it with the right amount of fluid but I will try running through the gears tomorrow and see what the verdict is on the fluid.

Sticking valve in the valve body maybe? I hate automatic transimissions, so complicated. Deffinitely does not sound like a fluid problem to me. I don't think you're going to be able to avoid taking it in to a tranny shop, just try to find one that is reputable first.
Did the flush and fill take care of the first problems you had? And now you have a second problem?
I get that in my truck when the fluid is low as well. It will slip out of drive when it's cold and you come to a stop, you have to rev it up before it engages again. It would also do it when I turned to the left really sharp as the fluid went to one side of the pan I suspect.

The fluid flush and fill seems to have taken care of the first problem (not shifting to 3rd) the tranny shifts fine now but sometimes now won't engage into drive from other gears.

Is it possible your linkage between the shifter and the tranny needs adjusting? When it does the "neutral" thing again, try adjusting the gear shift towards second a bit and see if the tranny goes into gear.

I was thinking that it must be something like that as the transmission seems to be operating fine otherwise. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give that a try, hopefully the linkage just needs adjustment. How would one do that? would it be expensive for a mechanic to repair it?

Try pouring in some of that automatic transmission conditioner tune-up cleaning type crap.
