Just thought I'd shoot a quick photo of a piston to pass along. This is what happens if you don't let your engine get good and warm before you take off. (Nope, wasn't me).

i didnt do it either lol the left one anyway, i dont think he warmed it up, just pulled the cord and went for a ride, busted the rod too and hacked the motor into 2 peices.
the one on the right i did.

That's major ugly.
The one I posted will still function pretty good but would be borderline of polishing for a reinstall. I just wanted to point out that scuffing will occur each time the engine is not quite ready to roll. On a VMax 4, this is more likely to happen on pistons 1 and 3. Before take off, you can touch the cylinders to see if the coolant has warmed them (using some common sense, of course).

I did that to #3 a few years ago as well. The engine was warm but I shut it down to help a buddy fix a Polaris chaincase leak. Didn't realize we had been shut down for as long as we were and when I fired back up, I took off down the lake and stuck #3. Fortunately there was no jug damage.

My vmax had both number 1 & 3 piston burnt down, but it turned out that the pulse lines to the fuel pumps run off them cylinders, and one was very loose (sucking air) and the other had a split in the hose, again, sucking big time air. which by the way, anyone who has never messed with thier pulse lines, I highly recomemned checking them, especially the one on cylinder one. it runs right next to the motor mount and mine had rubbed on the motor mount to the point to where it rubbed a hole in it.

Its the line that runs from the motor case, to the fuel pumps. theres one located under the number three cylinder, and there

them hose`s that run from the motor case, to the fuel pumps. one fuel pump is ran from a line that goes under number three cylinder, and the other fuel pump is ran by a line comming from under the number one cylinder. them dang things caused the previous owner of my sled, to burn down number one and three piston.
Here`s a picture of what happened to mine. i had rotated it for the picture, but actually it was rubbing on the motor mount, aparently it had rubbed a little slot in it, then it just split more from there. and my other pulse line was so loose, you could rotate it with almost no resistance at all. so I figured it was letting air by also, and thats why it along with the number one piston burnt down. needless to say, I put some carb board between the motor mount and the pulse line pictured, because it seamed like no matter which way i tried to twist the new hose, it still wanted to rub on the motor mount. and if I tried to just make it shoter so it would be pulled away from that mount, it started to bend the hose closed, and that would`nt be any good either. thats why i was suggesting, that whoever wants to, should check these.

what is a pulse line
The pulse line (pulser hose) carries a series of rapid pressure-vacumm puffs or pulses from the crankcase to the fuel pump causing the diaphram in the fuel pump to move back and forth, thus with one way valves on the pump, creates movement of fuel.

oh ok i replaced mine when i did the motor this summer so i should be good to go and ill check to see if they r rubbing anything to be sure
