View Full Version : Who wants Hydraulic brakes?

Not etched in stone her but a few have asked me if I'd make them a bracket.... The first one was trial and error but now with a prototype in hand I could make a jig and cut some of the time out of these.
So here it is, how many would want one? and would you want a bracket only or me to sorce the rest of the parts and assemble a kit to do the conversion?
I have a large sled "bone yard" near me the rest of the parts I could sorce used to help with the cost. The bracket is easier to price, it is time and materal, but the rest of the parts I'm not sure about right now I'd have to go talk to my guy and see what he will do for me. It's gonna help to know how many so i can lean on him about price :rotflmao:
Don't hold me to this but right now I'm thinking $100 for a bracket and maybe $200 for everything.
ask any questions and please PM me if you want to get on the list so i have a way to keep track of this OK

Two are signed up and I need another one for myself so I'm gearing up to make some now....
you wanted bracket only right? I'm gonna go get parts next week.
M
Yep, only need the bracket.....Did the stock brake line reach? Or did you have to get a longer one? I would assume these at least come with all the holes to bolt it down and hold the caliper, correct? What do you have for bolts holding the caliper on? Thanks.

I have 2" bar risers and a Phazer brake line was long enough. The bracket will be ready to bolt on, you'll need to get hardware I used metric flange-lock bolts for bracket to chain case, and bolts and nuts for caliper to bracket.
M
Sounds good, any idea when you'll have some made up? Thanks.

I made an alloy spacer on the cheap! Application: cable brake Vmax-4. Just add a vented rotor. Too poor to afford anything.5933
Did you notice anything different by doing that?

Hell yea. Road riding before I bought Peaches. Always on the throttle and always on the binders road riding. Not near the brake fading as with the solid rotor! Yet it didn't bother me putting fourth a real grip with my left hand!!!! over and over again!!!!!!!

The rotor is srx/viper late 90's to early 2000's , master cylinder and caliper off the same, Brake line is the sticky part as they vary across the years. 30" srx/viper is enough for std. height bars, if you want or have a riser you need to find a late 2000's phazer as it's 40"

I got a solid 8 hours in today...... Not sure my Argon bottle has enough gas to do all the welding tomorow, but I might be able to snag one from my neighbor of I run out.
Still on track to be shipping these early next week.

First off you guys should thank Pete Nydahl..... If he wasn't closed between the Holidays I would have been fixing my motor not doing your brakes!!! LOL
Things went well and I finished up. Have to pick up hardware tomorrow and they are ready to ship. Check your email guys I'll be intouch with totals with shipiping.
Braket only guys take a look at the hardware pic this is what your gonna need. The Tapered head bolt is 7/16 and the caliper will need to be drilled out to except this size.

Here's the finished product.
This one is actually yours Lyle.... :)
Got mine and put it all together the other day, works great......Great workmanship as well, anybody that want's hydraulic brakes for their sled, get ahold of Mike.
I absolutely MUST MUST have one of these units!
I have all the stuff from a vmax 600 (caliper and whatnot appears the same) however, do I need the different rotor?
It appears that I could just flip over the 92 rotor to change the offset to allow for the caliper?
I think you could get by with the stocker, you wouldn't need to flip it, but the newer vented rotors are plentiful and cheap on ebay......
Are they the same diameter?
is the only difference the venting? I rode a couple of days ago, and I really forgot how terrible the braking was on my sled. It stops, but it sure has no mercy on that poor little neglected cable!
I dont remember it being that much effort before. I just had it all apart to change the track, and its pretty nasty. I had to wonder if just laying out a nice pattern and spending some time on the drill press would improve it.
but if theres a direct ebay replacement for peanuts, I'll go that way.

I almost don't know how to say this.
There are no roads between towns uphere. only way is by sea or air.
We only have one airline company flying domestic. air Greenland. and All planes have been on the ground for 4 days now. Because of a strike.(lockout)
2 years ago, we went trough the same. cabin crew union and airgreenland couldn't agree on terms so they did the same. it lasted for a week. in the start of vakation time. total kaos. many peoples lost their tickets international. and no fresh vegetables or anything alse.
now the pilots are on strike????
those spoiled pilots have a start earnings at 110.000$ before all extras and a end earning at 300.000$ a year. plus a apartment if they need one, and a place in airgreenland own kindergarden, for the kids.
Air greenland wants more hours out of the pilots than they are flying now.(one week a year) they have 4 weeks less hours a year compared to union annual working hours for the average joe.
So the people of greenland are taken hostage by the pilots.
Air island pilots are denied flying extra fleights(they land 2 different places in greenland) only other link to the world. by their own pilot union. so no extra help.

Got mine this morning Mike. It looks great!
Just got it all bolted up and hose routed etc... I need to bleed it now and I went to the cupboard but the cupboard was bare.
Waiting patiently for the parts supplier to deliver it now. I did find that the plug for my heated visor fits and mounts nicely in the hole for the park brake lever. Also the wire runs nicely through the cable guide too if you just slightly enlarge it.
Cant wait to ride it. Im thinking this will be the single best thing you can do to your Vmax 4.

Mike..
thanks so much for making this setup for me. Its without a doubt the best addition to my V4 yet. I put 60 miles on yesterday and to be able to stop securely with one finger was much better than I even hoped for.
It was so simple to install (besides removing my original brake lever/ switch housing) and did I mention how great it is?
If anybody wants hydraulic brakes... do it! its worth it.
Thanks very much Mike.. and I mean it. Thanks for making a great contribution to my riding enjoyment.

How about a Parkbrake?
What I did was to Compress the brake lever and then drill the housing through the lever to excect a pin. The pin hangs on a lanyard cable. It's not perfect but is functional and really not that hard to set.
I just did this today and will post pics and dimentions if you guy want to mod. the ones you already have. I had seen a lever that had a park clip like the original cable brake assy. at one point but can't seem to find it again. If I do this would be better and will also let you guys know.

FYI for those of you that have contacted me but not placed orders yet....
I have parts enough for one more complete kit on hand and then it's gonna be bracket only, as I have bought up all the good parts I could find at my local bone yard.
This maybe subject to change as they cut more sleds up but right now the shelves are bare. They do actually have more stuff but all the rest are gonna need new brake pads and this will raise the prices.

One of these days I'm gonna spend some time at the bone yard, I'm really hoping to just find a lever that has the lock and will fit the Yamaha Master Cyl. & I like the way my memory switch mounts to it.

I installed a Bender hydraulic brake kit on my 94 750 a few years ago. It made a great difference in the braking action. It only took 6 months for Bender to deliver the kit!!!! I like Mike's brake kit, looks like it might provide even more stopping power.
Mike, why can't the stock Vmax rotor be used with you brake kit?
Vmaxmike
03-13-2011, 04:05 PM
The stock rotor could be used, but Hydraulics are going to cause a LOT more friction and heat. The Stock disc I doubt would be able to deal with the heat and cool properly causing fade, not to mention I simply don't like the riveted together piece of S&%t...

Hi Mike, what disc model do you reccommend for your brake kit? I can get one from a 2000 SRX.
In a perfect world the answer is "Viper" it's lighter.... But SRX will do well, and is alot easier to find, thus cheaper. There is info. about this in the thread on venting a rotor

Hey Mike, I was wondering what break pads (part #/make/model) to buy? And break line as well there is a good size nick in mine so i would like to replace it and pads before i install the kit.
Thanks.
Vmaxmike
03-29-2011, 12:41 PM
Sorry about the nick I must have missed that, I'll look to see if I have another brake line for ya. Is the nick in the line it self of just the protective cover? Pads are very common ones on a ton of Yamaha sleds just look them up for an '99 SRX, these pads last a really long time tho, there are alot of miles in the set I sent you. I wouldn't relpace them until they are gone they are a bit spendy ($30-$45 plus shipping)
If you order a Brake line I'd recomend getting one for a '07 and newer 4 stroke Phazer is longer and allows for bar riser and or better routing. Oem verder here in the states sells it for $26 or something.
PM or Email me and we can chat more.
