I just about had a tragedy yesterday. I was working in my garage and had been having a little trouble with my furnace. I turned the breaker off so it wouldn't run all the time. After 5 minutes, I smelled something hot. I got on a chair and was going to take the side cover off of the heater, when I saw a foot of flames. The gas valve was right there and I shut it off quickly and the fire went out. I would have lost 5 Vmaxes and an 08 Summit. My squirrel probably would have been BBQ'd as well. The heating guy will be here shortly. I'm glad I didn't just turn it off and walk out. It would have all been gone.

Gives you a sick feeling just knowing what might have happened. Damned fortunate you didn't walk out.

Furnace guy came today and got it fixed. The gas valve wasn't working properly. I just came in and the gas furnace got shut off until I can spend a few more hours in there to make sure it won't fail. I even turned the gas valve off manually. I bet Scrat won't mind the electric heat for a few nights.

Glad you got it shut off in time. That would have been a huge loss.
You got off cheap. I found out yesterday that I need a new furnace for the house. $4300. Ouch!

Jeez, Mark. What part of a furnace costs $4300? Tell them to take it apart and show you the parts inside that make it cost so much. For that kind of money, you should be able to at least RIDE it!

Well, that price is a little misleading.
Heat exchangers are all cracked: Carbon monoxide poisoning, $800
Weak capacitor: $200
Circuit board bad: $400
Labor: ???
All said and done, a bunch of new parts in a 15 year old furnace, and the dual blower could go bad.
New furnace was installed yesterday. Price included another heat duct run from the basement to the second story bedroom for my Grandson. We've been using an electric heater. Also had magnets installed on the gas lines to the water heater and furnace made by these guys: http://www.magnonenergy.com/naturalgastreatment.htm#Residential_ Natural Gas
Supposed to save me over %20 percent on the gas bill and make them last longer.
