I think they top out at around 115 stock.. It depends what you mean good for trails.. We have a 92, and it ALWAYS brought us home. Snapped one drive chain. Yes, the sled will pass pretty much everything, except a gas station... The sled is :super: .. If you try it, you won't be disapointed...

These sleds aren't the greatest sled in powder ( due to weight ), and have a 121" track.. I'd go with the 800.. And if you have some more money, you can get quad pipes for it... And clutch... And bore... And of course, a turbo kit...

But, I think you should get used to the sled's powerband before you go off modding it...

not to great on gas. i compare the big max to a classic muscle car, dousn't handle or ride the best but it has a feel like no other machine made! bar none!

Like comparing a Ford Taurus to a Shelby.

They are fast.

It's not a ditch banger.

They run forever.

They like gas.

compared to your 500, you better hang on when you nail the throttle.

I couldn't have said it better. Great analogy. Mine beats the snot out of me, I think I could adjust the suspension a little though. It handles alright but you really have to muscle it around. However the power is unmatched in my opinion.

Heinz - You don't happen to be from NE Indiana do you? I was out riding and passed quite a few people who were stopped on the trails. A few kids (your age) were in one group I passed and were staring like no tomorrow.

how will compar to my 96 polaris indy trail 500

I had a '02 Indy 500 (one of my daughters rode it, too slow for the rest of us). The VX800 is a totally different animal - pure muscle if tuned right.

Your Indy will power out long before the Vmax. Expect 8 or 9 miles per gallon. My Indy did not do that much better when trying to keep up with my "fast" sleds. The Vmax will handle the trails as well or better than the Indy - yes it is heavier but I have no problems keeping pace with F7s on the mountain trails - you've gotta know how to ride though. The Indy had a nicer ride than a pre '97 VX800 but the '97 felt just as good as the Indy. In my opinion, the Yamahas are easier to work on - but I don't know about the older Polaris.

The Yamaha is definetly more dependable. My brother has a couple of Indys like yours - one with a bad engine for no reason. Yamaha sleds can fail too but I seldom have a problem with the VX800 series.

My son reminded me today that of all the sleds in our arsnel, he would use the Indy to bust trail on narrow mountain slopes. It was the only one that would stay on top with him (6'4", 210#). He wouldn't be doing that with a VX800.
