I am going to help out my neighbor with his 89 Polaris 340. He wanted to start it up the other day and the whole handle and rope came out from the housing. I never had to fix one before. I guess they all must be pretty close in design. Anyone have any tips in doing it. I want to get it done soon for him. His dad uses it at times during the winter to haul wood to the house.

Thanks

you need to rewind the spring inside. i had one let go on me a while back.if you dont wind it enough the pull handle will flop down because there wont be enough tension to hold it up. if you wind it too much it will jam on you.

Look in your service manual, page 5-24. It shows how the Vmax-4 starter recoil is put together. Wear your safety glasses when you take it apart. Some starters have a sheet metal guard to hold everything together, some fly all over the place. There's probably a spring steel coil inside. Usually each end is bent and is held in place with a pin or a slot. Hopefully it just came out of the slot and unwound. If that's the case, put the ends back in the slots/pins, manually turn it like you were pulling the rope to put some spring tension on it, connect the starter rope back to the pulley, and slowly let it rewind back into the housing. It might take a few tries to get the right tension. I usually unwind them a little farther than it needs to be before hooking up the pull rope, but like Busted Max said, don't put too much tension on it. If the end of the spring is broken, you might be able to heat it with a torch and carefully put another bend in it. Spring steel will just bust if you don't heat it up first.
Good luck!
