Eating belts why?

This is my 1st ever vmax 800 and I have been blowing through belts, no idea why, the clutches are aligned OK, using yamaha belts, there is a noise comig from the primary..best way to discribe is like a scratching sound, even when belt is off. Thanks.

There is a ball bearing on the pto shaft behind the primary which will allow the clutch to rub on the magneto cover if it goes bad. Weak secondary springs or snow on the clutches will cause slippage and blow belts.

I also just got my very first 96 vmax4 800!!! Very fast and smooth!!!! Until it blows a brand new belt in 3 hours.... On the outside of the secondary there seems to be "loose washers" and it moves back and forth roughly 1/4-1/2 inch the new belt kind of seemed tight because once stopped it seemed to want to pull forwards a tad.....it's got 4 aaen expansion chambers... I'm really unsure as to the clutch and motor if it's stock or not...

there is a manual in the general questions section of the site, it has the correct settings in it, you need to check/set up the center to center, defection etc etc.

lf i where you i would;

1, follow this link and download the manual http://www.vmax4.com/files/800manual/800manual.pdf if that link dosent work , try this one

http://www.vmax4.com/showthread.php?4778-Vmax-4-800-Manual

2, l would take my belt of and thoroughly inspect my clutches, paying particular attention to my primary clutch for heat cracks coming out from the center of the clutch caused by too hot clutch from too tight belts.

3, Check belt to see that it is within spec, making sure it is a correct belt for a vmax4, Yamaha best or ultimax 3

4, take cap of primary check components and try to identify spring, sometimes putting the spring in water helps to show worn ID colours. Lube with dry graphite and re assemble as per the manual.

5, Set up the clutches according to the manual.

..............................go for a rip and get back to us.

Once you have a baseline, and we hopefully know what springs you have etc we can help you tune your sled for the engine / pipes you have. But who knows, you could have all the right springs and just bad belt/setup.

We will deal with your secondary if a problem surfaces.

PS, if you do nothing else, please read this thread
